I think that the use of a 17dBm mixer is very sensible. I use just such a system with 17dBm mixers (2 x G4DDK Anglian transverters) and I have PA3CMC, PA2CHR, PA0JMV, PA5MS, PG2M and a few others very close by. I have a lot of gain in the system and it is extremely rare for me to have any overload problems. The LO must be fed to each of the two mixers in phase and this is very easy with a resistive splitter. The 6dB loss means that at 17dBm you need 23dBm level before the splitter, this is easy and devices are plentiful .For 23dBm level mixers it becomes tricky because then you need almost a watt into the splitter. Filter leakage and PCB crosstalk is difficult to manage at this level. You can use a more expensive hybrid splitter and relax everything by 3dB but phase performance is not as good. However in the VHF region it is good enough. If you want a contest solution then buy an ME2T-PRO which has very good linearity at very high input levels. Only the latest radios have good enough performance to do it justice. Gabi has made the right choices here for an adaptive EME system. I use something very similar and it works very well. As for the LO I would make available an external input @ 0- 6dBm for those who really want to use a locked external synth LO. However the there are very good stable TCXOS that have excellent phase noise and frequency stability out there. I use a locked synth LO but would be happy to use one of the TCXOS used in the ME2T-PRO. They are excellent. So Gabi just build it. There is a need out there for such an item.
